About The Agency
The Registrar General’s Department is the official government agency responsible for recording and safeguarding the most important events in the life of every Jamaican citizen. From the moment a child is born to the final recording of death, the RGD serves as the legal custodian of identity, ensuring that every individual is recognized, documented, and accounted for within the nation’s civil structure.
Established to maintain a reliable and secure system of civil registration, the Department operates under the laws of Jamaica and plays a critical role in national development, governance, and social services. Its records form the backbone of identity verification for education, employment, travel, inheritance, and legal transactions.
At its core, the RGD provides services that include the registration and issuance of birth and death certificates, marriage registration and licensing, adoption records, and legal name changes through deed poll. It also offers correction and updating of official records, ensuring that citizens can maintain accurate documentation throughout their lifetime.
The Department is headquartered in Twickenham Park, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, and operates a network of offices across the island, making its services accessible to individuals in both urban and rural communities. Through these locations, the RGD delivers efficient, standardized services designed to meet the needs of Jamaicans locally and in the diaspora.
